To Make Eyeglasses Available to Needy

Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) of North Central Texas is making their 9 office locations available as drop-off sites for used eyeglasses.  The glasses are shipped to a Lions’ facility in Midland, Texas where they are cleaned, the lens correction noted on the glasses, and placed in a clean container.  The glasses are then made available to anyone who can’t afford to pay for an examination or for glasses.

Barry Beeson, a long-time member of the Lions Club is shown presenting the collection boxes to CCCS President Danny Wolf.

Team members at CCCS give back to the community as individuals and so does the agency as a whole.  Danny Wolf, President and CEO of CCCS joined the Lions Clubs to give back to the community and immediately made the headquarters in McKinney a drop-off site for used eyeglasses.  He then made the other offices in Denton, Carrollton, Greenville, Lewisville, Paris, Plano, Sherman and Texarkana available as well.  Anyone from the public wishing to donate old eyeglasses is encouraged to bring them in to any of these offices.

The International Lions Clubs were founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones, a Chicago businessman who was a member of several business organizations, but wondered why there were no organizations of businessmen dedicated to the betterment of their communities.  Today there are 1.4 million members of Lions International in 193 countries with the motto, “We Serve.”  Helen Keller personally challenged the Lions Club in 1925 to specialize in helping combat sight-related problems.  Donations to the Lions have funded over 18,000 cornea transplants in a single year and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for research, training and rehabilitation for the blind.  Lions are also focused on helping young people make responsible decisions regarding alcohol, drugs and peer pressure.

“We are happy to make our facilities available for folks to bring their eyeglasses, so they can be useful to someone else,” said Wolf.  “The Lions’ are a great organization for CCCS to become involved with for the betterment of the communities we serve.”
